Doctors For Dancers

What Is a DFD Dance Specialist?

Healthcare and wellness professionals who speak dance.

What They Are

Someone who speaks dance.

DFD Dance Specialists are healthcare and wellness professionals who understand what dancers do and what their bodies go through. They know what a convention weekend does to your legs, why nationals being two days away changes the conversation, and why your shoes, your floor and your rehearsal schedule all matter. Some are former dancers themselves.

01
They know dance

Class, rehearsals, competition season, tech week. They understand the schedule and the demands that come with it.

02
They see the whole dancer

Your training, your goals and your next performance, not just the part that hurts.

03
They want to help you keep dancing

Whatever their field, they’re here to help you stay healthy, keep training and keep doing what you love.

What’s the difference when a provider knows dance?

A provider unfamiliar with dance might sayA DFD Dance Specialist might ask
“Can’t you just avoid jumping?”
“Does the pain happen during takeoff, landing, or both?”
“Just stop dancing for a few weeks.”
“What’s your training schedule, and do you have any upcoming performances?”
“You’ll need to wear a boot and stop dancing for 4–6 weeks.”
“Let’s follow your medical restrictions and discuss what other activities may be safe while your injury heals.”
“Your hip flexibility looks fine.”
“Are you experiencing pain with turnout, extensions, or certain movements?”
“Maybe you should stop doing those tricks.”
“Which movement is causing the problem? Can you show me, mark it, or bring a video?”
“Try wearing different shoes.”
“What shoes are you training in, and can I see how you’re moving in them?”

DFD Dance Specialists Speak Dance.

Whether you’re working on your fouettés, perfecting your wings, hitting a freeze, or struggling with your turnout, you shouldn’t have to explain every movement to your healthcare provider.

DFD Dance Specialists understand that ballet, tap, hip-hop, ballroom, and every other style of dance come with their own physical demands. They know the difference between rehearsing for a performance, training for a competition, and dancing professionally.

Because the goal isn’t simply to get you out of pain. It’s to understand what your body needs so you can return to dancing safely and keep doing what you love.

Services vary by specialist, professional qualifications, and applicable licensing requirements.

Injured? You may not have to sit out completely.

Resting an injury doesn’t always mean stopping everything.

Many DFD Dance Specialists encourage dancers to come in sooner rather than later. Depending on the injury, they may be able to work on strength, conditioning, mobility or other movements while protecting the injured area.

  • Strength
  • Conditioning
  • Mobility
  • Modified movement

Sometimes a boot or time away from dance is absolutely necessary, but that doesn’t always mean putting every part of your training on hold. Any activity during recovery should be guided by an appropriately licensed healthcare professional and based on the dancer’s individual injury, medical restrictions, and treatment plan.

Anyone can put together a list of providers. At Doctors For Dancers, we’ve chosen to take a more personal approach to building our network.

Our membership process includes:

  • A personal interview with each prospective Dance Specialist

We take the time to get to know the professionals joining our network because understanding the unique needs of dancers matters to us.

An Important Note

We encourage dancers and families to independently verify a provider’s credentials, licensing where applicable, experience, and suitability before receiving care.
