Dr. Suzanne Clements Martin, DPT is founder and principal educator of Pilates Therapeutics LLC, providing live and virtual courses in the therapeutic application of the Pilates Method in the primary topics of the spine, women’s health and performing arts enhancement.
She maintains a private physical therapy and clinical Pilates practice, Total Body Development, in Marietta, GA and Oakland, CA, offering in-person and Zoom appointments.
Dr. Martin’s entire career has centered around the art and science of movement. Her passion for the wellbeing of performers is due to her lengthy tenure in the dance world as a dancer, choreographer, producer, educator, and physical therapist. Her commitment is to help dancers remain dancing through their dance season, preparing for performances and competitions, as well as fully recovering from injuries to help them achieve a full dance career. Her main goal is to help performers give full artistic attention to their art by delivering personalized quality therapy.
Her qualifications include a Masters in Dance, a Doctorate in physical therapy, along with advanced training in scoliosis specific treatment, certification with the APTA Academy of Pelvic Health, Myopain Seminars, Academy of Barefoot Rehabilitation and the Academy of Lymphatic Studies. She is an NCPT gold-certified Pilates Master, as well as a certified ACSM Cancer Exercise Specialist and ACSM Exercise Physiologist.
An avid promoter of Pilates and Lifestyle Fitness, she authored 3 fitness books with Dorling Kindersley, and wrote columns for Dance Magazine and Dance Studio Life for a decade. In addition to her recent publication, Spinal Asymmetry and Scoliosis, published by Handspring Publishing, she is presently working on a collaborative authorship with Elizabeth Larkam on Movement Practices for connective tissue and hypermobility, again with Handspring Publishing.
Her diverse background encompasses over 40 years of international teaching experience in the health and movement fields, blending art and science into her instruction. As a performing arts specialist, she conducted nutrition seminars for the School of the San Francisco Ballet and has been the lead physical therapist for Smuin Contemporary Ballet in San Francisco for over 25 years, as well as presenting sessions at the PMA, IADMS, PAMA, and DANCE USA for over 20 years. Her latest contribution to the DANCE USA Informational Papers was on Transitions in Dance with co-author Dr. Bonnie Robson. She recently co-presented with Dr. Linda Bluestein on Scoliosis and Hypermobility at the 2023 IADMS Columbus Conference.
She is married to Tom Martin for 41 years and they reside in Marietta, GA with their 2 guinea pigs, Beatrice, and Charlotte (AKA Blobbie Mae and Onionetta).
