Bio:

Dr. Lewis is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and expert on complex surgical reconstruction and sports medicine.  His expertise is sought out by professional and pre-professional dancers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.  Dr. Lewis developed a special interest in dance medicine upon learning that many surgeons were unaware of the specialized biomechanics, flexibility, and joint movement of the lower extremity required for dancers.  Dr. Lewis always promotes conservative and preventative measures whenever possible. However, when surgical intervention is warranted, he utilizes minimally invasive techniques whenever possible.  Dr. Lewis focuses on the needs of the sport and dance individual and selects surgeries that are appropriate for the dancer, which contrast with other sports and athletes. The goal for his surgical outcomes is to alleviate pain and restore function with the preservation of flexibility while still maintaining stability. He works in collaboration with specialized dance physical therapists to aid in quicker recovery times and frequently provides second opinions for many dancers. His patients have gone on to have successful professional ballet and Broadway careers.

Dr. Lewis completed his undergraduate degree and Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Florida State University. Dr. Lewis then earned a second Master’s of Science in Biomedical Sciences and his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine from Barry University. He completed a 3-year residency in Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery at Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation, FL and is board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Dr. Lewis takes a special interest in sports medicine and trauma and is currently the Chief of Podiatry in the Department of Orthopedics at Carroll Hospital Center.

Dr. Lewis is married to Dr. Tania Burinskas, former ballet dancer who trained at the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts with prestigious intensives at the Bolshoi Academy of Moscow.
