Philip Montana MD, MFA, CAQSM – Maimonides Medical Center
Dr. Philip Montana, MD, MFA, is a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine. He holds a BFA in Dance Performance from the University of Florida and an MFA in Dance Performance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Dr. Montana danced professionally for over a decade in New York City and Boston, performing with notable companies such as Adele Myers and Dancers, Annie Kloppenberg Dance Co., Christopher Williams Dance, Helen Simoneau Danse, Liz Gerring Dance Company, Mark Dendy Projects, and Shen Wei Dance Arts. During this time, he also worked as a private Pilates and group fitness instructor in both cities.
Dr. Montana has a strong passion for teaching and has taught dance at numerous institutions, including the Boston Conservatory, Dartmouth Dance Ensemble, Dance New Amsterdam, Kimball Union Academy, Lebanon Ballet School, Loggers Run Middle School, Open Door Studios, Performing Arts Center of Connecticut, and the University of Florida.
After experiencing a series of injuries, Dr. Montana decided to pursue further education. He completed a post-baccalaureate program at Harvard University before attending medical school at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Southern California, followed by a role as an attending hospitalist physician. Dr. Montana later completed two fellowships at Harvard’s Boston Children’s Hospital—one in Sports Medicine and another in Musculoskeletal Sports Ultrasound.
While at Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. Montana worked closely with the Boston Ballet, Boston Conservatory, Boston Arts Academy, and Dean College. His research focuses on the use of dynamic ultrasonography to understand hip microinstability, an often-overlooked cause of hip pain. He recently completed a study on three professional ballet companies to better understand hip microinstability in dancers specifically. Additionally, Dr. Montana has extensive experience working with patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobility disorders, and has worked to develop prolotherapy interventions to address multi-directional shoulder and sacroiliac joint instability.
