HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD
YOU NEED TO SIT OUT?
–DOCTORS FOR DANCERS
It’s all too common for dancers to seek help for an injury and hear those five little words that a dancer never wants to hear, “You need to sit out.” Advising dancers that they must stop dancing is possibly one of the worst things you can tell a dancer. Then why is that one of the most common answers dancers receive? In our opinion, the person who gives that answer as the only option doesn’t fully understand how dancers work.
We want dancers to know that there are people who specialize in helping them, they’re called Dance Specialists. Yes, they do exist! They understand how a dancer’s body works, the schedules, the training…They understand dance. Unfortunately, most dancers continue to dance through their injuries because they feel the option given to them of not dancing is not plausible. By continuing to dance through an injury without proper help, a catastrophic injury can occur and possibly end their dance career too early. We want to take the stigma out. Instead, we want you to think that by seeking help, you will be able to continue to dance and have longevity. We are hoping to change this problem by creating a new resource for the dance community called Doctors For Dancers.
We have been in the dance community for over 30 years and we had never heard of a Dance Specialist until two short years ago. Did you know they have been around for more than 40 years? When we tried searching for a Dance Specialist only a handful showed up on the web and we knew there had to be more out there. We were determined to find them. That’s why we created Doctors for Dancers. We wanted to be able to create a resource for the dance community so they can get the help they deserve. We are happy to have found Dance Specialists available across the United States and are adding new cities every day. Dancers are just a click away from finding help by visiting doctorsfordancers.com. Whether you are looking for help in your home town, while you are traveling for a convention or even need help online, we have a variety of Dance Specialists on our site including Physicians, Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Nutritionists, Massage Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Yoga and Pilates, and many more!
Seeing a Dance Specialist doesn’t mean you are never going to hear those five little words that you need to sit out, but it certainly won’t be the first thing you hear. They may ask questions that pertain to you as a dancer such as: what style of dance do you do, how many hours do you train a week, what kind of shoes do you dance in, what type of floor do you dance on, do you do a proper warm-up, etc. Why do they ask these questions? Because they understand Dancers! Some of our Dance Specialists even have a dance floor in their office like Magna Physical Therapy located in Avon, CT. Now, we call that service for dancers!
We recently had a dancer contact us for help as she has been receiving treatment for an injury for over a year and hasn’t been getting any better. We referred her to an office and she saw Kerry from MOTI Physical Therapy in Los Angeles, CA. We followed up with her and she said, “thank you so much, I finally have hope that I am going to get better. She understood me as a dancer and knew the kind of issues I was going through.” Stories like hers are the reason why we do this.
